The location of Komsomolsk-on-Amur has a certain natural beauty – it is on a bend in the wide Amur River, which flows eastwards from the Siberian hinterland (where it delineates a large part of the border between Russia and China) turns north at Khabarovsk and empties into the Sea of Okhotsk.
